Weekly Essay
On certain weeks you will be required to write a short essay in response to the assigned reading. You need to think carefully about what you have read and submit your typed reactions before each class meeting.
Here is how you do it.Read whatever you have been asked to respond to, and while reading, think about the following questions.
- How do you feel about what you are reading?
- What do you agree or disagree with?
- Can you identify with the situation?
- What would be the best way to evaluate the story?
1. The weekly essays require that you think about what you read and integrate your understanding of the material with a personal example or with other articles you have read for the course.Keep in mind that at minimum I am trying to judge whether you truly understand the theory or the point of the article or chapter. I also am judging whether you can apply what you read and that you understand the ramifications of what you read.
Feel free to include the following statements:I think that, I feel that, I see that, in my opinion, in addition, for example, consequently, however, etc.
2. Papers are graded on a 0-3 scale. If you fail to turn in an assigned paper, you get a “0â€. A “1†is a weak paper. It generally means that you did not address the issues or that you communicated your ideas poorly. A “2†means an acceptable paper and encompasses a wide range. Most papers will receive a “2â€.A “3†is an excellent paper. Few papers will receive a “3â€.
3. Don’t expect to do well in the beginning. Most students do poorly on the first two to three papers but improve during the semester. As the semester proceeds and you acquire a sense of how I grade and what I am looking for in the papers, I will raise the standard of what is expected, requiring that you think more deeply about the issues. That is, a paper that would get a “3†at the beginning of the semester will only get a “2†by the end of the semester.
4. Late papers – Papers are due when class begins.Submit your paper on Canvas or bring a paper copy to class.
5. Typed – All papers should be typed and spell checked.
6. Length – Do not exceed two typed pages (about 500 words). Part of learning how to write is learning to write concisely. In many instances, keeping the paper to two pages will be difficult. However, it can be done. Read each sentence and decide if it is necessary. Then, read each sentence and decide if the point can be made more concisely. On the other hand, if you cannot seem to find anything to say, do not increase the font to 14 just to take up two pages. This will be viewed unfavorably by me.
7. No Cover Page – do not include a cover page with your paper.Just get right to it.
