In “Ethics and the Moral Life Lewis Vaughn argues against trying not to do ethics — trying to not think too deeply about your moral belief regarding good and bad and right and wrong — on the basis that taking this easy way out : (1) increases the chance that “your responses to moral dilemmas or contradictions will be incomplete,confused, or mistaken” and (2) leads to “a kind of intellectual limbo in which personal moral progress is barely possible (Vaughn, 15)

I’d like you to further consider Vaughn’s argument by using Lenny Mendel in “The Shallowest Man” as an example to either support or reject ONE of these two reasons. Is Vaughn right or wrong about one of these two reasons, and exactly WHY is this the case?

Even if you agree with Mendel’s choice to go and then keep going to the hospital, his motive(s) for doing so, and the results of his visits, l’d like you to determine whether the fact that he thinks less and less deeply about his moral beliefs in the process does or does not lead to one of the two drawbacks that Vaughn identifies. lf you choose the first reason, l suggest focusing on one of the three claims – that responses will be incomplete, confused, or mistaken – and make the case either for or against one claims alone. lf you choose the second reason, you will need to be very clear on why Lenny is or is not in intellectual limbo and why personal moral progress is or is not barely possible for him.
