IMPORTANT NOTE REGARDING WORD LIMIT REQUIREMENTS:
Please note that each and every assignment has its own word limit.
Behavior change so difficult because predicting behavior and supporting behavior change is neither obvious nor common sense. It requires careful, thoughtful science that leads to a deep understanding of the nature of what motivates people and the social and economic pressures that act upon them (Kelly, M. P., & Barker, M. 2016).
The reasons why behavior change is such a challenge for individuals comes down to six common errors. Common sense, we mean the idea that understanding human behavior is so obvious that it needs little or no serious thought. It is about getting the message, across non-evidence-based models of behavior change in which messaging is the principal mechanism. Knowledge and information drive behavior, information from expert sources as a driver of behavior change. People act rationally, that they do what they know to be sensible and logical after critical and rational appraisal of the evidence. People act irrationally, People have their own reasons for doing things. It is possible to predict accurately, great strides in identifying key factors that shape behavior and in what works in changing behavior, it is still very difficult to say with any certainty how individual people will behave in any given situation.
The role and goal of public health in influencing behavior change is through Health education. The regressive inference approach is premised on the notion that things do not happen in a random or chance way; social relations and social practices are patterned. Current public health policy stresses the potential of cumulative, small changes in individual behavior to produce significant advancements in population health (Kelly, M. P., & Barker, M. 2016).
The challenges in helping people change behavior fall into one of six types: The change is impossible, as the situation stands. The change is too complex. The change is too hard to expect people to be able to accomplish on their own. The change takes too much time. The change is not important enough for the target population for them to want to engage in it. The target population forgets to perform the action that the change requires. (Supporting and Maintaining Behavior Change. 2019).
The different classifications of behavior change, one-time changes, repeated but finite changes, permanent lifestyle changes and situational changes. One-time changes, you may have to provide support, but once the action has been taken, an example of this Donating a kidney. Repeated, but finite changes require support for the change itself is important but help with maintaining the change until the goal is reached is more important. An example of this getting a child, the appropriate immunizations. Permanent lifestyle changes need to be sustained forever if they’re to be effective, support for both action and maintenance are crucial. An example quitting smoking. Situational changes need to be maintained over the long term, but only require action in certain situations. Although these actions don’t need to be performed constantly, they really need to be treated as a combination of all three other types. Example of this using car seat belts.
