IMPORTANT NOTE REGARDING WORD LIMIT REQUIREMENTS:
Please note that each and every assignment has its own word limit.
Behavior change can be difficult for a multitude of reasons. The availability of supportive behaviors, the availability of supportive feedback, the want to change. The drive for change can be lacking. The availability of cognitive rational reasoning can affect behavior change. When it comes to behavior change, you may be going against a lifetime of behaviors that have been ingrained. Peer groups can also make behavior change difficult. Positive reinforcement or positive affirmation of behavior can affect behavior change. Access to education can affect behavior change. Public health now, has the opportunity to really get communities involved in preventive health as well as get people more involved in managing and making informed health care decisions. These behavior changes can be based on evidenced based research that can reinforce the reason for needed change. The forums and platforms in which public health can get information out and to the patients has an impact on behavior change as well. Relating to the patients has a huge impact on behavior change.
Behavior changes can be very challenging dependent on the change agents or champions that a person surrounds themselves with. Challenges in helping people change behavior has a lot do with the specific behaviors you are trying to change. Is it chronic illness management, health preventions, reproductive health, life-cycle health, safe sex behavior that you are trying to change? Knowing your audience and how they are affected, what resources they have available to them, willingness to change at that time are all factors to consider when wanting to make a behavior change in someone.
There are three different classifications of behavior change: preventive health behavior, illness behavior, and sick-role behavior (Glanz, Rimer, and Viswanath, 2015). Preventive health behavior is what a healthy person does to maintain their health. They seek out evidenced based information on maintain a healthy living environment and take steps to ensure their health care is managed. They are an active participant in their care, seeking out immunizations, eating well, not engaging in dangerous health behaviors like smoking. They get preventive care. Public health can influence this behavior by providing resources and supportive education on preventive health care practices. Making things like immunizations and mammograms, testicular screening are examples of things that public health people can do in support of preventive health behavior change. In illness behavior a person who sees themselves as ill, is an active participant in finding a remedy for their illness. Public health can support in this in ensuring support groups of illness as well as ensuring access to care for anyone that needs it. Sick-role behavior is when one determines themselves to be ill and seeks out care from multiple providers, as to lessen the amount of responsibility they have for their health care. Public health professionals can be involved in this behavior change in providing evidenced based opportunities for individuals to learn about this perceived illness, but also give them the opportunity to take charge of their outcomes, and assist that individual in being involved and responsible for the care they get.
