The formal role of a charge nurse is a position of leadership. A charge nurse leads a nursing unit by planning, coordinating and evaluating nursing activities. In order to be a charge nurse, one must have a master’s degree, thus, requiring higher education. The American Nurses Association believes that leadership is an integral attribute of being a nurse. There are certain competencies that are crucial elements of being a leader including flexibility, creativity, leadership, organization and ethics (Kevas, Seljak & Stare, 2013). More specifically, in order to be successful in the role of a charge nurse, there are certain competencies specific to leading others and the organization. To lead others, one must have strong communication, conflict management, diversity, employee development and relationships (Grand Canyon University, 2018). In order to be a leader for people, a charge nurse needs to balance the roles and personalities of others, while ensuring that the best and safest patient care is being provided. Further, leading an organization requires attributes of change management, decision making, influence, problem solving and systems thinking (Grand Canyon University, 2018). As the leader of a unit, problems and decisions will need to be addressed by the charge nurse. Thus, it is crucial that the person in this position is able to aptly respond.
