Nurses have an essential role to effectively implement strategies to improve the delivery of health care services by having a clear understanding of translating evidence to practice. According to Leach (2018), the existence of a theory-practice gap in nursing practice is associated with several factors. These factors include the nurses’ level of engagement in research and the effect of knowledge gaps for nurse researchers and clinical practitioners (Leach, 2018). The first step to overcome the knowledge gap is to acknowledge how nurses view research. Nurses may not see the worth and connection of research in their respective specialty practice. One strategy to address the knowledge gap is building a strong collaboration with nursing educators and clinicians by developing projects that will involve the active participation of nurse clinicians and researchers on an identified nursing practice that needs to be improved ( Leach,2018). Also, nurse educators can consider including evidence-based practice-related skills in the annual hospital skills competency checklist and facilitating a dialogue with clinicians and managers that will hone understanding about the importance of translating research to practice.
Taking the lead in the implementation of evidence-based practice at my workplace will require understanding the culture of the organization. More so, it is best to recognize the characteristics of the clinicians, managers, researchers who are involved in the EBP to launch an effective way of communication and most importantly, recognizing the strengths of the participants and how will these be beneficial in creating a positive influence in the workplace.
