psyc 101 research methods

Respond back to each paragraph with 200 word minimum. When responding to your classmates for the reply posts requirement, take their research topic of interest and recommend a different type of research approach to the study of the topic they chose (Ex: “Another method that might also work is _______” or “Have you thought of the _________ method?” – we want to be respectful and professional and not criticize a classmate’s method choice) and explain why you would recommend that alternative method.

-This week’s lesson was very intriguing to me. I learned a lot from this week’s lesson. All of the different types of research have there pros and cons. One form of human behavior that I would be more interested in learning more about would be are more pregnant women choosing to have home births vs hospital births. I would use the archival research method. I have chosen this method vs the other research methods because of the large amount of data that would be available to me. I can research through hospital records and birth certificates form a specific period. The archival method is suited for my research because it would allow me to gather records from midwives and doulas about how many home births they have performed. What drew me to using this method is just the enormous amount of information that I would be able to gather.

I could look at the past 20 or 100 years in five-year stints and see if the number of home births increased or if it has stayed the same over time. The weakness of this method would be no actual participants. I would not get any information as to why home births have increased or decreased. I would not get any feedback from the future moms about if it was their 1st, 2nd, or 3rd child. If that weighed in on the decision to have a home birth or hospital birth. I would also have to gather all of the information and since there is such an abundance it will take some time to put everything together. There would also take time to compare all the information to make sure that it is factual. The strength of this method would be the amount of knowledge I would have access too. I would strictly be dealing with facts. There would be no people lying and trying to skew the results.

-For this weeks forum I wanted to pick a situation where if the amount of caffeine can help keep someone awake or if it is just something that our brains thinks keeps us awake. At my job, me and the other Marines that I work with work long hours at times and I always see people drinking monsters, coffee, other energy drinks or regular soda. I personally think that caffeine can help someone stay awake a little bit but I feel that it is more in the action of doing something with your body to distract your mind that you are tired. For instance, I have worked a busy fourteen and a half hour day out in the sun or running to alarms due to the job I have in security and got off work, back to my room and have felt dead tired but instead of going to sleep or taking a nap I went to the gym with no pre-workout drink and still felt tired when I arrived at the gym but as the workouts began I felt like I was less tired after my workout and the later hours rather than before the workout. I believe that was because I forced my body to distract itself for an hour in the gym which subconsciously caused me to wake up. Now in applying this theory to into an experiment I would be using the Placebo Effect. I would test this by bringing in different types of drinks with different amounts of caffeine to the Marines that I work with. Some of the drinks would have high amounts of caffeine, some would have about half the amount as the first and some of the drinks would just be a flavored drink with no caffeine but that could still pass as tasting like an energy drink and not water. I would test this for multiple days, with multiple different people and all of the drinks would be in bottles that look alike. Now after I tested this for a few days and get responses from all the Marines, I would come to a conclusion that people do not necessarily need caffeine to stay awake and its just the matter of them distracting themselves or them thinking that this drink can keep them awake. If the responses came back as partially feeling more awake or very few feeling more awake, my conclusion would be that caffeine does help the Marines that I work with stay awake and that it not just the matter of them distracting themselves. With this type of research, it can be an easy way of finding out what works for the Marines that I work with to stay awake but on the other hand I feel like it only represents a small amount of people and that every person reacts to things differently. Therefore even if the conclusion for the Marines that I work with is that they just need a distraction to keep them awake instead of an energy drink, I can not say that the conclusion works for every person.

-If I were to use any investigation method, I would use Naturalistic Observations. I was drawn to this because I feel as though researching humans in their natural habitat is the best way to gain information on their behavior. This is well suited for my hypothetical research because watching someone when they feel as though no one is looking or they are extremely comfortable is one great way to see a persons true behavior. The weakness of this type of research is that if the subject if aware that they are being watched the subject will not act natural and their is no clear analysis, it also requires a lot of time and money. The researcher may also have a bias opinion on the matter to fit their goal. A strength to this exercise is that the researcher will gain a better understanding of what the subject is interested in, their reaction to certain situations, and their way of life
