This discussion board is an opportunity to share your expectations of this class, start examining the kinds of topics we will explore in this class, and get to know your fellow students. This discussion thread has a number of parts. Please complete them all.

1. Reply to the following prompts:

  • When you think of U.S. Government and Politics, what do you think of? What pops into your mind?
  • What is a political issue that interests you? Why?
  • What is it that you personally hope to get out of this class/why are you taking this class?
  • How do you think the study of U.S. Government will relate to your day-to-day life (if at all)?
  • What are your educational goals?
  • Based on your experience, how has an instructor helped you achieve your goals?
  • What are your career goals?
  • What is something we would not know about you just by looking at you?

2. Take a look at the course syllabus/schedule.

  • Share two specific things from the syllabus (anything).
  • Does it look as though this course will help you achieve what you hoped to get out of the course (above)? How?
  • How will it help you achieve your educational goals (above)?
  • How can I as an instructor help you achieve your educational goals?
  • Do you think you’ll be able to keep up with the schedule and the workload?
  • Do you have any questions about the course that aren’t addressed on the syllabus (you may want to email me if you do)?

3. Take a look at chapter one of the Open to Debate e-text (if you do not yet have a copy of the e-text take a look at the chapter one power point lecture outline in this week’s course Canvas Module).

  • Describe, in a sentence or two for each, two specific topics from chapter one (anything). Share a quote from the text if you like.
  • Is this the kind of topic you were expecting to find in an Introduction to U.S. Government course? Why or why not?
  • Based on this, do you think you will find the topic of U.S. Government to be interesting throughout the semester? Why or why not?

4. Share a statement from a prominent politician (be sure to cite your source).

  • Based on the statement, what do you think the politician’s beliefs are about the ideal role of government?
  • Do you agree? Why or why not?

5. Government is the mechanism that allows individuals in society to coordinate their actions in order to create things they are not able to create on their own. Give an example.

  • In your example, how does government compel individuals to coordinate their actions and prevent individuals from being “free riders” taking advantage of the collective action without contributing?
