PEER 1

Hello everyone! My name is Racquel Primas, I’m thirty-one years old, have a one and a half year old little girl, and pregnant with baby number two whom happens to be due at the end of this semester. I know you’re all thinking I’m insane for starting grad school at this time in my life, but I truly believe nothing is impossible with the right amount of ambition and time management. Coming in with a BFA in Fashion Design is intimidating because I don’t have any formal preparation for not only this class, but the program as a whole.

Last year, my fiancé and I started an After School Program in Rockwall, TX and plan to expand the program to include a mental health aspect. Instead of relying on someone we hired to create the curriculum for the mental health component, I’ve decided to obtain my masters degree in the field to be knowledgable so that I can join forces with the team we’ve built and be hands on with bringing this idea to life. I truly believe this course will help me find my professional identity within the counseling world and better understand the different aspects and theories of counseling. This course will give me the tools to accomplish our goals for this program and give me the ability to help our students and their parents for years to come.

My clientele will be middle school students and their parents who need help navigating through the everyday struggles of those preteen years. Our program focuses a lot on fitness and staying active, so I would also be dealing with students who are having difficulties juggling school, social life, and sports. At such a young age, I would want my clinician to give me real life experiences and be relatable when talking to me. Someone who listens and allows me to pour out my emotions without judgement or downplaying what I may feel is a major problem in my life. I’m confident this class will help me explore the proper tools to be able to help this client and generations to come.
