PEER 1

Hello everyone! My name is Racquel Primas, I’m thirty-one years old, have a one and a half year old little girl, and pregnant with baby number two whom happens to be due at the end of this semester. I know you’re all thinking I’m insane for starting grad school at this time in my life, but I truly believe nothing is impossible with the right amount of ambition and time management. Coming in with a BFA in Fashion Design is intimidating because I don’t have any formal preparation for not only this class, but the program as a whole.

Last year, my fiancé and I started an After School Program in Rockwall, TX and plan to expand the program to include a mental health aspect. Instead of relying on someone we hired to create the curriculum for the mental health component, I’ve decided to obtain my masters degree in the field to be knowledgable so that I can join forces with the team we’ve built and be hands on with bringing this idea to life. I truly believe this course will help me find my professional identity within the counseling world and better understand the different aspects and theories of counseling. This course will give me the tools to accomplish our goals for this program and give me the ability to help our students and their parents for years to come.

My clientele will be middle school students and their parents who need help navigating through the everyday struggles of those preteen years. Our program focuses a lot on fitness and staying active, so I would also be dealing with students who are having difficulties juggling school, social life, and sports. At such a young age, I would want my clinician to give me real life experiences and be relatable when talking to me. Someone who listens and allows me to pour out my emotions without judgement or downplaying what I may feel is a major problem in my life. I’m confident this class will help me explore the proper tools to be able to help this client and generations to come.

Hi everyone !

My name is Kayla Hollimon. I live in Houston,TX and have 2 dogs (Coco and Bella). I graduated from the University of Houston with a B.S in Psychology. I currently work as a Crisis Intervention Specialist within the Brazosport ISD school district. My job allows me to interact with both students and families on a 1:1 level. I also build connections within various resources throughout the community ( United Way, Houston Food Bank, etc). Prior to my current job, I worked as a mental health technician in a psychiatric hospital. I rotated on adolescent, PICU (high acuity), and general population units. This was my first introduction to mental health. Prior to that position, I worked as a Registered Behavior Technician in various ABA clinics. My experience has taught me the importance of rapport, the various functions of behavior, deescalation tactics, how to interact with individuals in times of crisis, and that everyone is unique, meaning your approach should be flexible to suit each individual.

I believe that this course will have a positive impact on my career by providing me with more information about the field that can be applied to my current job and my end goal of owning my own practice.

If I were a client , I would want my clinician to take the time to learn about me and establish a rapport. Too often, counselors want to spend 10% of the time getting to know you and 90% of the time getting to know the problem. While I understand the crunch for time and understanding the purpose of the visit, if I am seeing you for multiple sessions, I want you to get to know me so that I can feel comfortable opening up. Further, I want a clinician that challenges me while also reinforcing my accomplishments. A clinician that is open minded would also be important. With an understanding of myself and my expectations for a clinician, I understand that these are things that I personally feel. Meaning, not everyone operates the same way I do. Some individuals may be okay with spending 90% of the time discussing the problem and others may not. It’s up to me to determine what they (the client) are comfortable with and be flexible enough to accommodate them.
