Grading Process for Essays
Your final grade for each essay will be total in the following manner:
- 70% of your grade will come from content
- 30% of your grade will come from correctness
Content is made up of the following (I will list these in order of importance):
- Grasp of the assigned topic
- Development of thesis statement
- Interesting and logical introduction
- Effective topic sentences
- Organized paragraphs
- Unity throughout the essay
- Effective transitions
- Logical conclusion (that restates the thesis in a new way)
- Overall coherence (the essay must support the thesis statement)
- Effective tone and mood (know your audience)
I assign points for correctness in the following manner:
- 15 can be earned for the introduction
- 40 points can be earned for the body
- 15 points can be earned for the conclusion
The other 30 points will come from grammar and MLA format
Each essay MUST be 2 pages in length, and it MUST follow MLA format (use Times New Roman, 12 point font). Also, YOU MUST submit your essay in a doc or docx format. I CANNOT open anything else; you will get a ZERO if I cannot open your file. If you fail to follow these guidelines, I will not grade your essay. Also, I will only mark the same grammatical error a couple of times. For example, if you have 5 comma splices, I might only mark the first two, but I will tell you in the form of a comment that you really need to work on comma splices. I will grade the first 2 essays that you submit more heavily (meaning that I will make more marks and annotations). After that, I will begin to make general comments. I do this because I eventually want you to find your own mistakes.
