individual assignment 2 different eyes and ears

The purpose of this assignment is five-fold:

  1. To explore how others become informed.
  2. To examine the broadcast and social media of 2020.
  3. To demonstrate the diversity in information consumption habits.
  4. To use the Critical Perspective in analyzing media habits.
  5. To help you develop into a more rational and reasoned information consumer.

We would like you to select a partner in your team. If your team has an odd number of members present today let your instructors know and we will pair you up with someone from a different team. Next, in class spend about 20 minutes interviewing each other on your media consumption habits. You should find out everything you can from your partner about how, when, where and why they consume information on a daily basis. Your questions might include, but should not be limited to:

  1. How many hours a day do you spend on each medium – radio, TV, Web, streaming, newspapers, magazines, blogs, Twitter, Facebook, MP3 player, video games, etc.?
  2. What is your PRIMARY information source? Your SECONDARY? And your TERTIARY sources?
  3. Do you watch TV? What’s your favorite show? When does it air?
  4. Do you have favorite bloggers, vloggers, TV or radio commentators? Who are they and when do you watch or listen to or read them?
  5. How do your media consumption habits differ or resemble those of your parents? Your friends?

This is not an exhaustive list, but you get the idea. Take inventory and make good notes on all the things your partner does differently from you. We are not concerned about your commonalities, just your differences. You should make detailed notes of your activities, your impressions, your observations. For any needed follow-up, get your partner’s contact information: phone number and email address.

Now, select a 48-hour period during the next week and live your partner’s media life. Try to do as many things as your partner describes that are NOT part of your own media life. Try to do them at the times your partner describes. The idea here is to abandon your own habits for two days and adopt those of your partner. If your partner listens to Rush Limbaugh, listen to Limbaugh (unless you do so regularly, as well). If your partner watches NCIS, watch an episode (unless you do so regularly as well).

Frame your analysis of of your experience using the Critical Perspective. Consider whether your partner’s media experiences expanded your own vision of or perspective on the world, whether it increased your understanding of how people become informed. Assess whether your partner’s experiences increased or expanded your access to “actionable information.” What assumptions of yours were challenged by your partner’s media? Has that media expanded your “bounds of debate” by making you aware of who or what is missing from your own media? Finally, in what way might your partner’s media lead to the betterment of society?

Next, write a 500-word reaction paper on Canvas that frames your analysis and reflections. You may use first person, but you don’t use “I feel” or “I think.” Please keep in mind, too, that your readings and discussions in class should inform your essay. This is NOT a chronology of your experiences, but a thoughtful examination. Critically assess your partner’s media life and, using what you’ve already learned, offer a grounded essay on the experience.

If you do not attend this class, it is your responsibility to contact the instructor for an assigned partner..
