  • In the podcast, Americus Reed says that “a brand can communicate something. How you wear your pants can communicate something. The particular sort of portfolio of colors that you choose to adorn yourself with can communicate something.” Dr. Schwartzman describes these human creations that are not a part of the body as artifacts. Why are artifacts tricky to interpret compared to other forms of communication?
  • In the podcast, Americus Reed also says that “a brand is so much more than a tagline or a logo; it is more of a meaning system.” How does this statement reinforce Dr. Schwartzman’s description of human communication as a “process of interacting through symbol systems to create and share meaning? (p. 3).

(Appendix A walks you through the various types of speeches you might be giving at special events throughout life.) You probably have your own reasons for study- ing communication that blend and add to these rationales. As we’ll discover soon, a full-fledged course in communication can help you lead a more fulfilling personal, academic, and profes- sional life. We embark on the journey of understand- ing communication by asking two basic ques- tions: First, what is communication? Second, why should we care about it? Then we explore the major types of communication. Next, we analyze the components that go into every instance of communication, from casual con- versations to formal orations. Our excursion concludes with some common misconcep- tions about communication and how to cor- rect them. Defining Communication What is communication? That’s a deceptively easy question. All sorts of job advertisements use the word “communication,” and it seems that every employer wants someone with “good communication skills.” In relationships, we beg for friends and partners who are “good communicators.” Yet when you ask some- one to define what a good communicator is, you get a lot of puzzled looks and confusing answers. Although communication surrounds us, we have a hard time specifying exactly what we mean by the term. Communication covers a lot of territory, but the following definition should reveal the basic characteristics. Human communication is a process of interacting through symbol systems to create and share meanings. It’s a short definition, but one that requires elaboration. Process As a process, communication is ongoing and dynamic. The ongoing nature of communica- tion appears as we try to separate when com- munication starts and stops. For example, you might not speak to someone for years, but the silence definitely sends a message. When you interact with a friend today, can you say that your previous conversations and observations had no impact at all on what you said or did? Every time we communicate, our communica- tion is shaped by past instances and can affect future communication experiences. If you ever noticed how various conversations overlap and evolve in social gatherings, you can see how difficult it is to count discrete individual occurrences of communication. The dynamic quality of communication deals with how it can change. What began as a joke might be taken as an insult.Words that signified friendly courtesy later intensify into declarations of love.Your tone of voice adjusts when a young child enters the room.Whether through time or as the crafting of messages to different audiences, communication can alter intentionally or accidentally. One result of communication being a process is that all of its components are inter- dependent. If one part of communication malfunctions, then the entire process breaks down. To communicate effectively, every ele- ment in communication has to run smoothly. Interaction Since communication involves interaction, it places some obligations on all participants. Everyone involved in communication bears some responsibility for its proper operation. In a relationship, for example, whenever two peo- ple experience conflict, both of them should try to find ways they can resolve it. There is no such thing as “That’s your problem” if people are engaged in genuine communication. When people interact through communication, they operate under certain basic principles. One of
