Discussion Question 1: Among the topics this week in the course text is a discussion of Lykken’s argument that a parenting license should be required. Read this discussion on page 26 of the textbook and then respond to all of the following:
1. Do you agree or disagree with Lykken’s argument? Are there particular parts about which you feel very strongly? Whichever way you feel, take into account that socially, most people agree that not everyone is an equally good parent.
2. What are qualities, characteristics, and life situations that are necessary to be a “good” parent? What are qualities, characteristics, and life situations that are not necessary, but would substantially benefit either/both the parent and child and make it easier to be a “good” parent? Make specific note of how and why your answers regarding what is necessary differed, if they differed.
3. What suggestions or recommendations would you give to new parents or expecting parents on what it means to be a “good” parent?
