discussion post unions and minorities
In July 2007, the United Auto Workers (UAW) went through a difficult time in contract negotiations. “The Big Three,” known as GM, Ford, and Chrysler, had lost billions of dollars in recent years and were fighting to save jobs and pensions. The UAW saved jobs by cost reductions and agreeing to new changes in labor contracts. Some of the costs reductions included lower wages for all new union workers, a four-year wage freeze for all current union workers, and job guarantees to keep plants open.
Discuss some of the reasons why union membership has changed over the years. Do you feel the shift changed because of the economy or because of moral consciousness? Explain why your support your position.
