The illustration above, of Ovid’s Metamorphoses by Antonio Tempesta, depicts Cyparissus changed into a cypress tree. All of the myths you will read for the next couple of weeks from Ovid will revolve around this concept; in many ways, Thom Andersen’s documentary Los Angeles Plays Itself also illustrates how movies have transformed the landscape of Los Angeles into something mythic, magical, and fantastic. In your discussion response, consider the ‘transformational’ relationship between Hollywood’s use and vision of Los Angeles and your own lived experience of the city.
