Now that the term is basically over and you have finished up your learning portfolio, here are some final reminders and tips from the guy who grades your work:

  1. Do not search the internet for answers or discuss the work with any other students. This constitutes academic dishonesty which will result in a grade of 0 on the entire learning portfolio, which is worth 18% of the final grade in the class. If you don’t know how to answer the questions, please review the provided course materials or use the tutoring provided for free by the college. The software that scans your work compares it to the internet, so please be very careful here. Every semester students violate this rule, get a 0 on the assignment, fail the class, and then say it isn’t fair. It is fair, these are the rules, and it is your job to follow them. Thank you.
  2. Do all of the individual assignments, and follow the directions closely. When you think you are done with each assignment, re-read the directions and critically analyze whether you followed them. It is imperative that you respond directly to the prompts rather than simply discussing what you are comfortable with.
  3. Edit your writing to make sure that it is “college level.” Failure to submit writing of adequate quality will result in significantly lower grades. I suggest treating each sentence as its own entity, and asking yourself if the sentence sounds clear and is grammatically correct. Then make sure that each sentence supports the idea of the paragraph it is in, and if the paragraph supports your overall response to the given prompt. This is probably what a writing tutor would do, so if you are unsure about your writing, you should take it in to a college writing tutor and ask for help. College is an appropriate place to become a clear, competent writer, so I encourage you to take this opportunity to make it happen if your skills are limited.
  4. Make sure you submit your work by the deadline. Late assignments that are submitted before the final exam are docked 50%. Nothing will be accepted after the final exam, for any reason.
