discussion 3 exponentials
Discussion 3 – Exponentials
Discussion – Exponentials
Background
Exponentials and quadratic equations are concepts that can be applied in a great deal of areas from respiratory therapy to life insurance. This week, we are covering Exponentials, Factoring, Trinomials and Quadratic Equations. By understanding basic equations, we can use critical thinking skills and apply the basics to more specific examples that may be found in our careers.
We are also focusing this week’s discussion forum on quantitative literacy. Here are 2 articles to learn more about quantitative literacy: Quantitative Literacy for Undergraduate Business Students in the 21st Century and Numeracy: The new literacy for a data-drenched society.
Prompt
Choose one of the problems listed below that covers week 3 concepts (exponentials, factoring, trinomials and quadratic equations) and reply.
NOTE No more than 1 student should respond to each problem as your initial post. The first student to post will get credit. If a student has already responded, you will need to choose a different problem.
Initial Post
1) Solve the problem and show each step you took to find the answer. Check your answer. In paragraph structure, explain each step in your own words.
2) Research quantitative literacy or numeracy and discuss it in a short paragraph (100 + words). Define and discuss the importance of quantitative literacy to your future career. You are welcome to use one of the 2 articles above or use your own. Include at least one IWG-style reference.
Problems
Factor the polynomial / trinomial:
- 3x + 9y
- 15x + 18y
- 24x^2 + 36x^3
- 14x^2y^4 + 28x^6y^2
- b(x – 3) – 6(x – 3)
- z(x + 2) + 5(x + 2)
- x^2 + 4x
- x^2 – 9x
- x^2 + 5x +6
- x^2 + 8x + 7
- x^2 + 6x + 8
- x^2 + 7x + 10
- x^2 – 7x + 12
Solve the trinomial by factoring or quadratic formula:
14. x^2 + 5x + 4 = 0
15. x^2 + 6x + 5 = 0
16. x^2 + 9x + 20 = 0
17. x^2 + 5x = 0
18. x^2 – 3x = 0
19. x^2 + 14x + 45 = 0
20. x^2 – 4x – 60 = 0
21. x^2 = 19x
22. x^2 +3x + 5 = 0
23. x^2 – 4x – 2 = 0
24. x^2 + 6x + 9 = 0
25. x^2 – 5x – 10 = 0
26. x^2 + 4x + 6 = 0
27. x^2 – 6x + 9 = 0
28. x^2 -11x + 18 = 0
29. 3x^2 = 9x
30. 2x^2 = 8x
31. x^2 + 10x = -16
32. x^2 – x = 12
33.2x^2 -x – 3 = 0
34. x^2 – 3x = 40
35. x^2 + 13x + 36=0
36. x^2 – x = 42
37. x^2 + 9x + 18 = 0
38. x^2 – 4x – 21 = 0
39. x^2 + 2x = 48
40. x^2 +3x = 2
To receive full credit for your initial post, complete all of the steps. Remember to label your initial post with your name and problem number (Ex: Stringer Problem #34).
