The purpose of this assignment is to talk to one of the women in your family (mother, aunt or grandmother) – preferably the eldest female available to you…and have her tell you a story about how she was affected by a “woman’s issue” while she was growing up. Perhaps she wanted to play baseball – but it was a boy’s only league; perhaps she started her period and had to seek her father’s assistance; perhaps she met Gloria Steinem during a college rally; perhaps her brother could date at 15 but she had to wait until she was 16 because SHE was a GIRL. Perhaps your grandmother eloped!

REQUIREMENTS

Minimum story length: 350 words

1.Compelling & descriptive TITLE.

2.Paragraph 1: Introduction. Include who the story is about, what was her age when the story occurred? Year / significant historical milestone/s?

3.Paragraph 2: The “Gender Story” itself. Why was it memorable to her – in terms of growing up as a female? Was her family impacted by this incident? If so, how? Explain. Be sure to include at least ONE QUOTATION or HISTORICAL FACTOID REFERENCE with a footnote.

Paragraph 3: Conclusion. What was the significance of your relative’s “GENDER ISSUE” (context) and its lasting impact on her / you … has society changed since then?
