critique discussion below homeland security

South Sudan descended into civil war in late 2013 tearing the country apart creating one of the fastest growing refugee crises in the world with an estimated four million South Sudanese being displaced (Xinhua, 2019). According to the CIA (2011) the Sudanese Army is primarily responsible for the internal security and protection of its country’s borders. The Army has an infantry division deployed in each of the country’s four regional military commands that respond to sporadic attacks by Sudanese insurgent groups based in Ethiopia (CIA, 2011). After the 2010 elections, prior to the current civil war, South Sudan secured its independence from Sudan and it was at this point the country endured a commitment to utilize military integration to co-opt armed opposition (Warner, 2015). While it does appear that the Army in South Sudan is the primary securing force there are more specific mission within that aide the citizens. Pasi (2020) reports that more that 50, mostly young female officers, have taken part in training that works to educate them on six grave violations against children in the region allowing these officers to protect South Sudanese children. These violations consist of killing and maiming, recruitment and use of children for soldiers, sexual violence, abduction, attacks against schools, hospitals and the overall denial of humanitarian assistance (Pasi, 2020). So yes, the primary goal of the Army is to provide a certain level of attainable peace in the country they do have specific missions that seek to protect certain vulnerable demographics in the region.

The way that South Sudan implements their military for domestic use is vastly different than that of the United States. While the Army in South Sudan serves as the primary security and peace force in the country it also works on specialized programs to protect certain demographics against potential threats faced. Many of these specialized programs within the domestic US are generally ran by privatized groups with government subsidiaries. Also, it appears where the US utilizes police South Sudan utilizes their military for that function. South Sudan’s primary security force is in fact their military’s capabilities. Much of the military’s role within the US consist of intelligence agency reporting and mobilization of National Guard units to support natural disasters. There is little need to activate an infantry division within the US to provide security as seen in South Sudan, and this remains one of the major differences.
