Agile and Traditional Project Management

Introduction

Project management entails a complex process of ensuring the objectives of the given project are met within the set timelines, with complete conformity of the agreed terms, and within the initial approved financial plan. The project managers have a choice to apply Agile or Traditional project running procedures. The choice concerning both techniques gets more complex, especially where the project is large, application of technology, and strict timelines.

Agile PM vs. Traditional PM

Traditional project management is a general exercise that embraces a combination of advanced systems applied for scheduling, approximating, and regulating actions. Traditional project management is mostly applied to projects where actions are accomplished in a sequence with minimal expected changes (Demirkesen & Ozorhon, 2017). On the other hand, agile project method breaks down assignments into lesser sections that are accomplished in work periods running from the strategy stage to analysis and quality assurance (QA). Notably, the sessions are known as sprints, the word for iteration applied in one precise and common agile improvement technique known as Scrum (Eskerod & Larsen, 2018). The Agile PM is appropriate for large projects whereby there are many uncertainties, and constant change or tactics is necessary. Remarkably, large projects consist of several risks, uncertainties, and complex scope and use of technology. As such, traditional project management techniques may not deliver the desired results.

Conclusion

The traditional project management methods are easier to implement since they only involve introducing, scheduling, implementing, monitoring, and concluding. However, for complex and unpredictable large scale projects, Agile PM is the most appropriate. The Agile PM is in particular, complex requiring high levels of training and experience but suitable for large projects. The iteration enables the managers to device effective methods of coping with the change of the initial plans with minimal wastage of resources such as time and money.

Hello XXXXX,

Thank you for sharing your insights! How is the rolling-wave planning and scheduling project methodology related to the Agile project management?

Professor XXXXX,

The following is the student question:

Hello Class,

In recent years, agile has taken the globe of project management (Links to an external site.) and code development by storm. everybody appears to be talking regarding this project management methodology (Singh, 2019). Personally, I had never heard of Agile management. I work in construction, so everything is generally the same every time which is considered traditional project management.

Traditional Project Management (waterfall) approach is linear where all the phases of a process occur in sequence. Its concept depends on predictable tools and predictable experience. Each and every project follows the same life cycle which includes the stages such as feasibility, plan, design, build, test, production, support. The entire project is planned upfront without any scope for changing requirements. This approach assumes that time and cost are variables and requirements are fixed. This is the reason why traditional project management faces budget and timeline issues.

When a traditional system focuses on upfront planning where factors like cost, scope, and time are given importance, Agile project management is better suited to volatile and innovative projects, such as software development, where there are many risks, where the scope of the project is likely to change, and where an iterative methodology is needed so that risks are mitigated and opportunities fully exploited. Any projects associated with a high level of uncertainty (such as research and development, software development), or in highly volatile industries (such as IT or oil and gas industry), can benefit from an agile approach.

Both Traditional and Agile Project Management have their merits and demerits. It depends on the nature of the product and the circumstances around it which determine the type of method to be used (Pawar, 2018).
