The current technological advancement has impacted the development of health systems. On the other hand, nurses are the most potential health professional in these systems and should be part and parcel of these changes (Salmond & Echevarria, 2017). Due to their education level and expertise, both Registered Nurses (RNs) and the Advanced Practice, Registered Nurses (APRNs) have their unique views on health care issues. These competencies significantly help them in influencing healthcare policies in different ways. The development of a common understanding of the impact of health policies is a concept that requires the participation of the nursing profession in the development and implementation of policies that impact patient outcomes.

One of the potential opportunities for RNs and APRNs to engage in the policy-making process is to be affiliated with nursing professional organizations. Various organizations facilitate the improvement of health care through policy advocacy, including the Emergency Nurse Association, American Nurse Association, and the American Academy of Nursing. Additionally, nursing leadership is another opportunity that helps in advocating for nursing policies. Leadership skills play a significant role in influencing the various health care reforms through education and training programs and the provision of the relevant resources (Hargett et al., 2017). However, various setbacks are associated with these opportunities. The most common challenge is change resistance, where health care professionals are reluctant of various changes that require them to adopt new strategies and processes.

The promotion of effective communication is an integrated approach in the mitigation of these challenges. One of the strategic measures that will facilitate effective communication is interprofessional collaboration among health care professionals. Consequently, adopting an effective leadership style will substantially impact the transition process from conventional methods to new healthcare delivery approaches.
